An excellent stock photography site.
May 4th
I just recently stumbled upon an excellent stock photography website.
It's called Fotolia and it offers outstanding photographs for as little as $1 (for the low-resolution version)!
Thee photos are outstanding, completely royalty free and, with few limitations, can be used as much as you want within your materials. I recently used a bunch of them for a customer of mine, Expression Of Life Chiropractic. THe images are simply stunning and would cost thousands of dollars if you attempted to stage these images yourself.
One of the best things about Fotolia is the search engine. Not only is there extensive category and keyword information, but they show you pictures within the same group as well as with the same model. They even have a way to put in a color and get pictures that match the color!
All this for just $1 a picture! (High resolution versions aren't much more anywhere from $2 to $5).
Definitely check Fotolia out.
Creating Digital Dashboards: DashboardSpy
Apr 19th
If you are in the business of building digital dashboads, those web-based executive views that give you, instanatly a sense of the health of things, then check out DashboardSpy .
Personally, I think good design always comes from other good design. In other words, take pieces of other sites, and use them as our own. This site, for example, uses the color scheme from JetBlue Airlines .
DashboardSpy is a site that collects real-life digital dashboards from around the business world. If you're looking for inspiration for your dashboard, this site will give you lots of it. Just go to the site and be inspired.
Some of the dashboards include:
- Crime Analysis
- Cellular Telephone Service
- Remote Netowrk Stability
- Healthcare networks
- And, lots, lots more.
Take a look at it and let me know what you think.

Dada-ismb: The New Neuroses
Feb 27th
So went to the Doctor last week for the regular, monthly checkup. All was good, but Marni had to take a quad screen . The quad screen is conducted during the second trimester (15 weeks to 22 weeks) to identify pregnancies at a higher risk for Down syndrome, trisomy 18, or an open neural tube defect.
It’s a simple blood test that will help tell us if our baby-to-be might (operative word here) have some defects. In other words, the test is far from perfect. Still, a good score means you have less to worry about. A bad score means that you have more (but you also may not need more).
Yikes. Talk about a new source of agida! Yikes. While not the first time in my life that I had little control of the outcome of a test, I couldn’t help but feel a little vulnerable. Could I have prepared myself for it? Is there any way that I could done something to further insure that my kid passes.
I guess this is a glimpse into my future.
BTW – The test came back great. All is good with little Z. Or at least we have a good chance of thinking so….Argggh!!!
Ogg Beats MP3
Jan 5th
When people think of digital audio, you think of MP3: The motion picture group’s layer-3.
But, there are other formats in town: AAC, WMA, MP-4 and many others.
One of the most interesting ones is Ogg Vorbis. Not only is it completely open source (and free of any restrictions), but it also sounds better. One of the best features is that it corrects a huge mistake that is implicit with MP3: Cannot handle gapless audio playback. So if you want to listen to that great live album or Pink Floyd CD, you have to absorb a little skip in the music. My personal tastes in music side towards the electronic/dance music realm. The whole art of it is in the seamless transition between one track to another. MP3 doesn’t handle this problem. Ogg does!
Try out ogg. You won’t go back.
